Charmes-Chambertin is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. It is located in the southern part of the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin and on the lower hillside east of Chambertin (on the other side of the Route des Grands Crus), north of Mazoyères-Chambertin and south of Griotte-Chambertin. The AOC was created in 1937.
Since 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin has built a reputation for wines that reflect their individual terroir and vintage. A balance of tradition and modern techniques characterizes Joseph Drouhin winemaking and vineyard management: on site nursery, plowing, leaf removal, 100% hand harvesting, open fermenters, fermenting and aging in oak. With its historic location deep in the heart of Beaune, the quality of its vineyards and the expertise resulting from years of experience in the cultivation of vines and traditional vinification, Maison Joseph Drouhin is uniquely placed to uphold authentic Burgundian style. Estate-grown Grapes of 2009 Vintage and later Now Officially Organic.
The oak is aggressive here, clashing with the bracing acidity, but not out of bounds, thanks to the concentrated texture. Bright black cherry, blackberry and meaty licorice notes offset the oak on the long, fresh and muscular finish. Best from 2023 through 2045. 50 cases imported. April 30, 2019
Drouhin's 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is showing very well from bottle, unfurling in the glass with aromas of ripe cherry and berry fruit that mingle with nuances of espresso, dried flowers and grilled meats, all framed by some toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a sappy core of nicely concentrated fruit, fine tannins and bright balancing acids. This is an elegant, racy Charmes-Chambertin that is somewhat reminiscent of the 2010 rendition.
(Domaine Joseph Drouhin, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy, France, Red) The Charmes-Chambertin is quite fruit-forward and open-knit this year, bursting from the glass with exuberant aromas of cherry framed by new oak. On the palate the wine is supple, expansive and juicy, but misses some depth and textural detail after the very serious Grands-Echezeaux which preceded it. (Drink between 2020-2030)
