Vosne-Romanée wine is produced in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Côte de Nuits of Burgundy as well as in the neighbouring commune of Flagey-Échezeaux. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Vosne-Romanée may only be used for red wine with Pinot noir as the main grape. There are a total of 15 Premier Cru vineyards in the two communes, as well as six Grand Cru vineyards in Vosne-Romanée and two in Flagey-Échezeaux. These Grand Cru vineyards include Burgundy's most iconic, sought-after and expensive red wines, with Romanée-Conti of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti at the pinnacle: "There can be little doubt that in the firmament of the Cote de nuits, Vosne-Romanée is the brightest star."
There is no Flagey-Échezeaux appellation; the village and Premier Cru vineyards of this commune are part of the Vosne-Romanée AOC.
Since 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin has built a reputation for wines that reflect their individual terroir and vintage. A balance of tradition and modern techniques characterizes Joseph Drouhin winemaking and vineyard management: on site nursery, plowing, leaf removal, 100% hand harvesting, open fermenters, fermenting and aging in oak. With its historic location deep in the heart of Beaune, the quality of its vineyards and the expertise resulting from years of experience in the cultivation of vines and traditional vinification, Maison Joseph Drouhin is uniquely placed to uphold authentic Burgundian style. Estate-grown Grapes of 2009 Vintage and later Now Officially Organic.
The relatively new Premier Cru bottling from Vosne chez Drouhin is excellent in 2018. This is a blend of purchased fruit from Petits Monts, Malconsorts and Chaumes, so its pedigree is indisputable and the wine is fully worthy of its roots, offering up a superb bouquet of black plums, black raspberries, raw cocoa, duck, a touch of sweet hazelnut, dark soil tones and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows off excellent mid-palate depth, with fine backend mineral drive, ripe, buried tannins and lovely length and grip on the nascently complex finish. First class juice.
Blended from Malconsorts, Chaumes and Petits Monts, though not Véronique Drouhin’s own holding of the latter. A full deep purple, the bouquet is a little bit stern. A gorgeous volume of fruit here, with a rich damask feel, future roses in the making with a wealth of sweeter red fruit behind.
