This domaine bottling comes from 0.39ha in the Combe d'Orveau, one of the coolest sites in the vineyard. The fruit is destemmed but the berries are left as intact as possible, with a substantial percentage of whole clusters, and the wine is aged in just over 50% new casks. The result has a lovely intensity of blackberry fruit and exotic spice, a firm, finely-honed tannic edge, and substantial extract on the palate. The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from the lieu-dit of Les Combes d’Orveaux and is raised with 30% whole bunch. The well-defined bouquet features dark berry fruit infused with black pepper and clove. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet and candied entry, marmalade and blood orange filtering through the black fruit, and quite a dense finish. It will need time in bottle, but this is a very fine Echézeaux. - Neal Martin
First year for the lieu-dit on the label. Made from very old vines on the south facing slope back in the combe, which gets very hot in the afternoon with much cooler nights, the first vineyard to pick in Côte de Nuits. Fresh glowing red purple. The nose has gone missing for the moment, but this is very harmonious on the palate, almost with a darkly toasted aspect to it though, just got there in time. 100% whole bunch. - Jasper Morris
The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru is showing especially well, bursting with scents of peonies, blood orange, wild plums, cassis and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and expressive, it's lively and sapid, with a pretty core of fruit, bright acids and powdery tannins. This derives from domaine holdings in En Orveaux, where Weber identifies appreciable diurnal shift as a source of freshness. - William Kelley
