Gevrey-Chambertin wine is produced in the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Brochon in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Gevrey-Chambertin may be used only for red wine with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. There are nine Grand Cru vineyards within the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambertin and eight others called Chambertin in combination with something else, such as Chapelle-Chambertin. While Gevrey-Chambertin also has several highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards, it has a particularly large amount of vineyards at the village level for a Côte de Nuits appellation. This is because the vineyards of the AOC stretch further to the east (beyond the N74 road) than in most neighbouring AOCs.
When Alain Burguet officiallly retired in 2011, the winery was turned over to the able hands of his 3 sons, Bachelet-trained Jean-Luc and Gouges-mentored Eric and Alain. They farm biodynamically and their de-stemmed fruit is fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wines are bottled without filtration or fining. The vines for Mes Favorites are 75-100 years old.
The domaine’s old vine bottling of Mes Favorites is also a superb example of the 2019 vintage. The wine shows some lovely red fruity shadings in the bouquet, offering up scents of red and black cherries, smoked meats, a beautiful base of dark soil tones, cloves, roses, cedar and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, plush and full-bodied, with a superb core of fruit, ripe, seamless tannins, fine focus and grip and a long, complex and classy finish. The 2019 Mes Favorites will want a few years in the cellar to soften up its backend tannins, but should drink very nicely not too far down the road.
