The origins of Labégorce lie in a large estate in the northern parts of the commune of Margaux. The Labégorce vineyards include three main plots, totalling 70 hectares in all. Each parcel of vines, of which there are many, is vinified separately. The blend is 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
Bordering on châteaux Margaux and Lascombes, The Perrodo family acquired Labégorce in 1989 and renovated not only the château building, but also the vineyard. They also improved winemaking, and Labégorce is now a charming wine with beautiful structure, bright fruit, and great finesse.
The 2023 Labégorce has a well-defined nose that leans slightly more toward red than black fruit. It's understated at first but soon coheres and gains intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with very pliant tannins. Satin-like in texture and very cohesive, with a touch of spice on the finish, this is a classy Margaux that will give a great deal of pleasure over the next 15 to 20 years. Warning through: it will be difficult to resist in its youth. - Neal Martin
Based on close to an even split of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2023 Château Labégorce has a spicy, medium-bodied, supple, complex profile that's almost already hard to resist. Ripe red and black fruits, loamy earth, and savory herb notes define the aromatics, and it has nicely integrated background oak, good mid-palate density, and outstanding length. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
