Ziereisen - Gutedel Badischer Steingruble 2014

Ziereisen Description

The Gutedel is an ancient grape variety - its origin may have been 5,000 years ago in Upper Egypt. Today it is still present all over the world, above all as a table grape, but is only relevant for viticulture in parts of Switzerland, where it operates under the names Chasselas or Fendant, and in the Markgräflerland region of Baden. There, the renowned exceptional winery Ziereisen has taken on the supposedly stale Gutedel in a special way.
The vines for this wine, which are up to 40 years old, are in the stone pit, a steep slope dominated by lime. Hand picking goes without saying here. After that, the grapes were mashed in overnight, gently pressed for several hours and fermented spontaneously.

On the nose rather reserved: subtle yellow fruit with smoky and herbaceous notes and a pronounced mineral spice. Powerful, complex and dense on the palate with restrained, slightly tart fruit - all the more structure for that. Thoroughly dry, juicy, melty, with chalky-smoky notes and fine acidity in a beautiful, spicy finish. If you tasted it blind, you would probably classify this great wine in Burgundy - and thus in a much higher price range. The question naturally arises of how a grape variety with so much potential could be sidelined.
