Your Vin Picks for the month of October 2024:

1) 2022 Bzikot Bourgogne Blanc Cote d'Or

Unsung Burg Star - From those very humble beginnings as Polish emigrés who arrived in Puligny just before the war with nothing, the Bzikot family domaine has managed to acquire an impressive 4ha of some of the most valuable agricultural land in the world in Puligny-Montrachet. With minimal intervention in the vineyards and cellar, Sylvain Bzikot produces wines that are at one ripe and rich, yet elegant and complex. Their Cote d’Or is one of our perennial favorites, and the 2022 one of their best ever.

2) 2023 Graci Etna Bianco

Native Sicilian Charmer - This blend of native varietals Carricante (85%) and Catarratto is a wonderful expression of Sicilian terroir. As Monica Larner noted when giving the 2022 92 points, “a distinct mineral note that adds extra sharpness and brightness. Over the years, the percentage of Carricante has increased in the blend. This grape's salty-mineral profile takes center stage.” The 2023 is just as fine, and drinking perfectly already.

3) 2023 Domaine Chapel Beaujolais Villages

Bring on 2023! - The son of one of France’s leading chefs, David Chapel, and his wife Michelle set up their wine project in the village of Régnié. With organic vineyards located in the best parts of Beaujolais, they produce delicious and high-quality wines. The Beaujolais-Villages comes from various plots of Gamay lying 380-440 metres above sea level; the Gamay vines are between 40 and 50 years old. After manual harvest, grapes are meticulously selected, undergo a semi-carbonic maceration, and spend six months in stainless steel. Finally, the wine is bottled without being filtered, clarified or adding sulfites. This is crisp, pure, direct; Gamay at its French finest.

4) 2022 Monteraponi Chianti Classico

The Insider’s Chianti - Too often Chianti is taken for granted as solid but homogenous. Monteraponi is situated in Radda, one of a handful of Chianti communes that display distinctive terroir; higher slopes, cool nights and stony, limestone-rich soils give the wine both an aromatic radiance and feeling muscularity. it stands out, full of bittersweet cherries, earthy notes, firm acidity and fine grained tannins. Radda’s most famous wine, Pergole Torte, is not labeled Chianti; Monteraponi is part of a new wave of producers making traditional Chianti Classico here.
