Simon Bize - Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Marconnets 2018

This 0.80 parcel was planted in 1973 and sits on deep sandy soil. It is the only Savigny les Beaune premier cru that is south of the river (Beaune side), all the rest are north. There is always more sun on this parcel so it tends to get riper than the rest. It's deep sandy soil doesn't retain water as well so cool vintages tend to suits Marconnets the best with it's personality tending towards more flesh and weight.

Simon Bize Description

There are a handful of domaines in Burgundy that we think of as almost being synonymous with their village - Domaine Simon Bize is one of them.

“Is there a more under-appreciated great Burgundy domaine these days than Domaine Simon Bize et Fils? Both the red and the white wines here are absolutely stellar (and have been for generations), and yet, I always get the sense that the Simon Bize wines remain some of the best-kept secrets in all of Burgundy.” — JOHN GILMAN

The domaine has a long history, having been founded in 1890, and farms 22 hectares of vines. Their holdings are a laundry list of Savigny-les-Beaune's best sites, from perfectly situated lieux-dits to the best premier cru parcels of the appellation. Their house style is one partial to whole cluster fermentation for the reds and little to no new oak on both whites and reds.

A View from the Cellar: 92 Points

The 2018 Marconnets is also a fine example of the vintage, with perhaps a slightly sappier personality than the Fournaux, but still a wine of purity and soil signature. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a very stylish blend of black cherries, cassis, espresso, dark soil tones, roasted pigeon and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and very well-balanced, with a sappy core of fruit, fine undertow of soil, ripe, seamless tannins and impressive length and grip on the promising finish. This will take a year or two longer to blossom than the Fournaux, but it is going to be excellent. (Drink between 2026-2060)

Vinous: 91-93 Points

The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Marconnets 1er Cru has one of the finest bouquets from Bize’s 2018s, featuring pure black cherry, bilberry and pressed iris aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle tannins, crisp black fruit laced with black pepper and a harmonious finish. Good potential. (Drink between 2021-2034)
