Rivers Marie - Chardonnay Purrington Rued Sonoma Coast 2019
Jeb Dunnuck: 96 Points
Lots of exotic chamomile, candied lemon, melon, and pure honeysuckle notes emerge from the 2019 Chardonnay Purrington Reud Vineyard, which comes from a terrific site on the Sonoma Coast. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a wonderful spine of acidity, terrific purity of fruit, and a great finish that brings just a touch of classic Sonoma Coast salty minerality. As with most 2019s, it has a slightly rounded, approachable style that gives it lots of up-front appeal, yet given its solid mid-palate as well as its bright spine of acidity, it should easily evolve for a solid decade.
Vinous: 94 Points
From vines planted in 1969, the 2019 Chardonnay Purrington Rued Vineyard is a complex, multi-dimensional wine that needs quite a bit of air to be at its most expressive. Effusive, soaring aromatics lead into a deep core of fruit in a vertical, structured Chardonnay that offers serious intensity. Dried lemon peel, sage, crushed rocks and slate all open in the glass. Readers will find a Chardonnay that leans more into the mineral/savory end of the spectrum. Today, I see less of the tropical aromatic profile that is typical of Rued Chardonnays, while the fruit is shy. It will be interesting to see to what degree those qualities blossom with time.
