Paolo Scavino winery was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto from Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, fourth generation, run the family Estate. Through 70 years of work, Enrico Scavino has researched and purchased some of the most historic vineyards cultivated with Nebbiolo for Barolo to experience and show the uniqueness of each site.
The Scavino family owns 30 hectares entirely in the Barolo area and vinifies grapes from their own vineyards located in the villages of Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno, Roddi and Monforte d’Alba.
The approach to both viticulture and winemaking is scrupulous, respectful and is aimed at preserving and therefore enhancing the expression and peculiarities of each vineyard in the wines.
Thanks to its location in an open valley where heat gets dispersed, the Scavino’s Bricco Ambrogio vines benefit from marked diurnal and nocturnal temperature variations that encourage the development of great aromatics and slightly softer tannins than the other crus. The 2019 clearly demonstrates this, with its heady fragrance of blue flower, ripe berry and flavors of raspberry copote, cranberry, licorice and a dollop of mocha. Taut, fine-grained tannins provide the enveloping framework while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and energized. Drink 2028–2044. Abv: 14.5%
Moving into the single cru wines, the 2019 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is lifted and appealing, with spice and floral notes weaving together, along with wild strawberry, candied flowers, and fresh sage. This continues gracefully to the palate while taking on the tension and linear drive that readers should come to expect from the 2019 vintage. Medium-bodied and long on the palate, it has present but refined tannins throughout. Best After 2025
The 2019 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio (with 6,800 bottles made) needs more time to open. With fruit from the village of Roddi, this expression tends to be more accessible overall, with dark cherry, dried raspberry, spice and earthy iris root. Like some of the other wines in this set of releases, the aromas had difficultly coming out at the time I tasted these samples.
