Vosne-Romanée wine is produced in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Côte de Nuits of Burgundy as well as in the neighbouring commune of Flagey-Échezeaux. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Vosne-Romanée may only be used for red wine with Pinot noir as the main grape. There are a total of 15 Premier Cru vineyards in the two communes, as well as six Grand Cru vineyards in Vosne-Romanée and two in Flagey-Échezeaux. These Grand Cru vineyards include Burgundy's most iconic, sought-after and expensive red wines, with Romanée-Conti of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti at the pinnacle: "There can be little doubt that in the firmament of the Cote de nuits, Vosne-Romanée is the brightest star."
There is no Flagey-Échezeaux appellation; the village and Premier Cru vineyards of this commune are part of the Vosne-Romanée AOC.
Méo-Camuzet is one of the most celebrated domaines of the Côte d’Or, located in the heart of prestigious Vosne-Romanée. The domaine boasts fourteen hectares of land in some of the most spectacular appellations and crus of Burgundy. The vineyard land in Burgundy is highly parceled out among families, which makes it rare for anyone to have enough vines to be able to bottle one grand cru, let alone the six that the Méos have. The early beginnings of the domaine left it in the hands of share-croppers. The last twenty years have brought substantial changes that have fostered a new chapter for the Méo family.
Poured just before Cros Parantoux but just after Richebourg, Aux Brûlées is classed among the domaine's very best reds by Jean-Nicolas Méo. Aged in 80% new wood to reflect its structure, depth and fruit concentration, this has plenty of colour and intensity, ripe raspberry and bramble fruit, refreshing underlying tension and lovely balance and palate length. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru, which is de-stemmed, has a complex bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit laced with incense and subtle potpourri aromas. The beautifully balanced palate offers very fine tannins, good cohesion and impressive depth. There’s a pinch of spice on the finish, which displays superb breeding. Excellent.
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées is brilliant, unfurling in the glass with an exquisite bouquet of sweet red berries, cherries, orange rind, smoked duck and exotic spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and enveloping wine framed by velvety tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long and youthfully chalky finish. From a parcel planted in the 1930s, I often think that Aux Brûlées is Méo's finest wine; and while I'd give the Cros Parantoux the edge this year, it is a superb effort. (WK)
Jean-Nicolas’ 2018 Brûlées is also a stunning young wine in the making. This comes in at 13.5 percent octane and soars from the glass in a complex blend of black plums, black cherries, duck, black minerality, Vosne spices, dark chocolate and nutty new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full and very elegant in profile, with a sappy core of black fruit, beautiful soil signature, ripe, buried tannins and great balance and grip on the very, very long, very promising finish. 94+
