The Clos de Malte is situated on 7 hectares at the head of a small valley, generally well exposed and protected from the wind. The Clos occupies almost all of the 7.8 hectare climat of Sous La Fée, and sits at the foot of a track that runs upwards to the Montagne des Trois Croix. As a ‘Clos’ there is indeed a stone wall around much of this vineyard’s boundary, and also one in the middle too, forming not just a small tier between two elevations, but also marking where a rail-line once existed. The name Clos de Malte has been used since the 1800s, referring to the Chevaliers de Malte*, who had built the church in Saint-Jean. The vineyard was planted by the great-grandfather of Pierre-Henry Gagey, who eventually sold all to the Joly family in 1940. In 1993, Jadot re-purchased the vineyard with the exception of a small area near the house of the Jolys – a ‘cordon sanitaire’ for the Jolys perhaps, yet Jadot still have the contract for those ‘garden’ vines.
Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.
Aromas of citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit, clear honey and almonds introduce the 2020 Santenay Clos de Malte Blanc (Domaine Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, charming wine that's bright and vibrant, concluding with a chalky finish. This is another success for this late-ripening site.
The 2020 Santenay Clos de Malte Blanc has a zesty nose with blood orange and light citrus aromas, just a very small reduction that is noticeable. The palate is well balanced and shows much more complexity and personality compared to the Santenay Blanc, a little chalkiness towards the finish and more persistency. This should mature nicely in bottle.
Clear pale yellow. A pretty bouquet, lightly buttery, fruit not flowers, very well balanced on the palate, no undue flesh, excellent intensity at the back based around the acidity.
