Marsannay wine is produced in the communes of Marsannay-la-Côte, Couchey and Chenôve in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Marsannay may be used for red and rosé wine with Pinot noir, as well as white wine with Chardonnay as the main grape variety. Red wine accounts for the largest part of the production, around two-thirds. Marsannay is the only village-level appellation which may produce rosé wines, under the designation Marsannay rosé. All other Burgundy rosés are restricted to the regional appellation Bourgogne. There are no Grand Cru or Premier Cru vineyards in Marsannay. The Marsannay AOC was created in 1987, and is the most recent addition to the Côte de Nuits.
This vineyard is located in the Côte de Nuits in the village of Chenôve, at the foot of the hill. Since 2019 it has been upgraded to a village appellation. It is no longer a regional appellation. This vineyard is rather old, 2/3 have been planted in 1953. Harvest is done by hand, grapes are put in small cases in order not to damage the berries. Grapes are then sorted out by hand and destemmed. Maceration in open wooden vats or in stanless steel vats lasts 3 to 4 weeks. During fermentation pigeage is done twice per day. The wine ages 18 months in oak barrels from our cooperage; 1/3 of the barrels are new. AGING POTENTIAL 5-10 years.
Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.
Clear vibrant purple, a clean fresh energy to this reproduced on the palate, a wine that makes me smile. So far from a blockbuster but undeniable elegance. Having only just been promoted from Bourgogne to Marsannay, Chapître is proving itself to be one of the best lieux-dits of the appellation.
