Chambolle Musigny lies just north of Vougeot and South of Morey Saint Denis. There are 24 Premiers Crus and 2 Grands Crus. The Chambolle Musigny vineyards is unique in the Côte de Nuits for the chalky composition of its soils just over a hard rocky bedrock which stresses the vines. Les Baudes is situated just beneath the « Bonnes Mares Grand Cru » vineyard, near the Morey Saint-Denis village. The grapes bear small little dark red berries. The bunches are destemmed; they macerate in open vats during 4 weeks helping this subtle terroir to reveal itself. After devatting, the wines are aged in oak barrels during 18 months. AGING POTENTIAL 10 years and more, even 15/20 years.
Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.
A typical Chambolle, perfumed with generous, bright raspberry fruit and some lovely spice notes. The texture is light and fresh, yet there is enough body to make the round, supple finish linger on the palate. Just below Bonnes-Mares, Les Baudes is among the top rank of premier crus in Chambolle. The 0.27ha parcel farmed by Jadot is the property of Domaine Gagey. The grapes were destemmed and gently fermented before ageing in cask (35% new). (Drink between 2025-2040)
The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes (Domaine Gagey) unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries and plums mingled with hints of orange rind and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, it's lively, deep and concentrated, with ample reserves of ripe, powdery tannin and a long, resonant finish.
