Louis Jadot - Corton-Charlemagne 2019

Corton is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red and white wine in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. It is located on a hill shared between the three villages of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy. The appellation covers the lower parts of the Corton hill and includes several subordinate vineyard names, or climats, within the AOC. Because of the size of the AOC and the variability of these climats, it is the rule rather than the exception that the name of the climat is indicated together with that of the Corton AOC, leading to designations such as Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Les Bressandes. Corton is rare in this aspect, as the 'climat' is seldom used for other Grand Cru appellations in Côte d'Or. The AOC was created in 1937.

Corton wines are mostly red (around 95 per cent of the total production in the AOC) and made from the Pinot noir grape, however a smaller quantity of white Corton from Chardonnay is also produced. Around 500,000 bottles a year are produced from the vines.

The Corton appellation itself is the Côte de Beaune's only Grand Cru appellation for red wine, and is the largest Grand Cru of Burgundy.

Louis Jadot Description

Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.

James Suckling: 97 Points

Complex and sensual nose of citrus and pineapple with a touch of melted butter, the powerful and highly structured palate energized by the driving mineral acidity that pushes the tightly wound finish out a long way. Drink or hold.

Wine Advocate: 95 Points

Aromas of citrus zest, freshly baked bread, beeswax, buttered popcorn and vanilla pod introduce the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a full-bodied, satiny, layered wine that's rich and muscular, with a concentrated, structured core of fruit girdled by racy acids and chalky dry extract. Long and resonant, it will reward patience. (WK)

Inside Burgundy: 95-97 Points

From Pougets. The Jadot habit is to show this after the Montrachet, but it maanges to stand up all the same. The 2019 is really quite a complex wine. Sunny of course, but not over-ripe, this is definitely a big wine, not much more than 14%, but explosive on the palate. This wine can carry it, but you will really have to wait to enjoy it at its best.

Decanter: 94 Points

From a domaine-owned plot facing due south in Les Pougets, purchased by the Jadot family in the 19th century. Somewhat closed initially, but opening with a bit of time to show a ripe pear fruit character, with hints of beeswax and fresh hay. On the palate, the wine is rich and substantial, with balanced acidity that reflects the southern exposition. With time this should open well, for there is a lot of potential here. (Drink between 2021-2025)

Wine Spectator

A rich, creamy style, featuring peach, apple, lemon and vanilla aromas and flavors underlined by vibrant structure. Tightens up as this evolves through the finish, where oak spice accents linger. (BS)
