Louis Jadot - Clos Vougeot 2020

Containing the largest Grand Cru in all of the Côte d’Or, Vougeot, the village, takes its name from the small stream flowing through it, called Vouge. Over three quarters of the village retains Grand Cru status, and a single vineyard at that: Clos de Vougeot (or simply, Clos Vougeot). Its mass—over 50 ha—retains the single name chiefly for historic reasons.

But today, Clos de Vougeot contains over 80 owners and shows significant soil and slope variations within its boundaries. The top, bordering Musigny and Grands Echezeaux, is calcareous and gravelly on oolitic limestone and exhibits wonderful drainage. The middle sections are limestone, gravel and clay with less of a slope. The lower part has little slant and is mostly made of clay. Historically the diverse parcels were blended but today the abundance of owners means that everyone has his own style. Exploring and understanding them is part of the allure of Clos de Vougeot.

In general a fine Clos de Vougeot when young will be dense and dark but juicy, with a pronounced austerity, and needs a good ten years to bring it to its full potential.

Louis Jadot Description

Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.

James Suckling: 97 Points

Rich and gamey nose, of the kind that gets real Burgundy freaks very excited. Iron, smoke and earth in its soul. With aeration it develops wonderful, super-ripe sour-cherry fruit. Then comes the massive structure of the expansive yet fresh finish, the wine moving over your palate like a great ocean liner plowing through the waves of the North Atlantic. Here's one with decades of aging potential. From organically grown grapes.

Wine Spectator: 95 Points

Inside Burgundy: 94-96 Points

Fine rich purple, solid nose as is typical, but not overwrought nor over ripe. Punchy on the palate, the menthol is back along with dark cherry and raspberry, the tannins are present but biding their time, the acidity offering a promising accompaniment for the decade before this is ready to start drinking.
