The Côte du Py vineyard consists of 13 acres situated on the slopes of an extinct volcano over the village of Villié Morgon, benefiting from an ideal terroir of granite and schist. After being fermented in vats for 20 days, this wine is matured in oak barrels for 12 months, 30% in new oak barrels.
Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.
This shows lots of finesse, with raspberry tart and ripe cherry notes infused with violet, mocha and anise accents. Plush, inviting tannins give support, with integrated acidity keeping it focused. Drink now through 2030.
The 2018 Morgon Côte du Py is showing very well, mingling aromas of black cherries and cassis with subtle hints of grilled meats and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and nicely concentrated, with lively acids and powdery structuring tannins. It's a step up in depth and incipient complexity over the estate's regular Morgon.
Purchased by Maison Louis Jadot in 1996, Château des Jacques is a fine, forward and supple Morgon which delivers lots of intense, ripe, dark-red fruit in 2018. Attractive sweetness and a floral note on the finish. Matured 10 months in old/new oak from the Alliers, Limousin and Nivernais. Classy and polished Morgon - drinking well already. (Drink between 2021-2025)
(Château des Jacques Morgon Côte du Py Red) Dark magenta. Expansive red and blue fruit, violet, exotic spice and mineral qualities on the smoky nose. Appealingly sweet black raspberry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors deepen and take on a spicy aspect as the wine opens up. Shows excellent clarity and solid thrust on an impressively long, subtly chewy finish that features sneaky tannins and lingering blue fruit character.
