Louis Jadot - Chambertin Clos de Beze 2017 (1.5L)

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is located within the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, together with a group of nine Grand Cru vineyards all having "Chambertin" as part of their name. It is located uphill from (to the west of) the Route des Grands Crus, borders on Chambertin in the north, Griotte-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin in the east (across the road) and Mazis-Chambertin in the north. The AOC was created in 1937.

Under AOC regulations some wine from Chambertin-Clos de Bèze may be labeled as just Chambertin. Since Chambertin-Clos de Bèze has a good reputation on its own, this is not widely practiced.

Louis Jadot Description

Founded in 1859, by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, he was the first of his family to arrive in Beaune from Belgium in 1794 and soon began purchasing Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. With grape growing a part of his heritage, Louis Henry set about gaining experience first in the cellars, in the evaluation of wines, and then in the vineyards, in the study of viticulture. The house of Louis Jadot has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and currently owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots. In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses.

Wine Enthusiast: 96 Points

James Suckling: 96 Points

There’s a wild and exotic edge to the nose with red and violet flowers, blood oranges, pomegranate and an array of fine, bright red fruit, as well as a dusting of hard, brown spices and wild-forest notes. The palate is succulent, very juicy and intense and has an athletic tannin structure with powerful, long tannins that hold the finish well. Very old vines, planted in the 1920s.

Wine Advocate: 93-95 Points

One of the finest wines in the Jadot portfolio, the 2017 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) unfurls in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, menthol, dark chocolate, blood orange and grilled meats. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with superb depth and dimension, succulent acids and notable concentration, its tannins entirely cloaked in fruit. While this is a comparatively supple, giving rendition of this cuvée, it will nevertheless demand patience.

Decanter: 95 Points

A View from the Cellar: 95 Points

In contrast to the youthfully closed down Chambertin, the 2016 Clos de Bèze chez Jadot was really showing well at the time of my visit. The bouquet is pure, complex and vibrant, wafting from the glass in a fine mix of red and black cherries, grilled meats, dark soil tones, espresso, woodsmoke, bitter chocolate and spicy oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid in the mid-palate, with suave, ripe tannins, tangy acids and laser-like focus on the very long, soil-driven and complex finish. Great juice.
