LIOCO was at the vanguard of the New California Wine movement, and since 2005 has been rendering minimalist wines from some of the state’s premier vineyard sites. Inspired by traditional European tradition and the California wines of the 1980’s, the winery is led by the dynamic husband and wife team of Matt & Sara Licklider. Based in Healdsburg, LIOCO seeks out the “special places”–often dry-farmed, organic/bio vineyards, hand-harvested with interesting soil, older vines, & heritage clones. The authentic dirt and rocks they source fruit from include Sonoma, Mendocino, Santa Cruz, and Santa Barbara. Along with winemaker Drew Huffine and viticulturist Prudy Foxx, the LIOCO team is redefining California, delivering transparency and natural balance in every wine.
SITE From two historic Mendocino County vineyards – one with 70 year-old, dry-farmed Carignan (93%) pitched on an exposed rock slope at 2,400 feet; the other with 50 year-old Valdiguié (7%) organically farmed on clay soils in a cool, upland valley. These rapidly vanishing California grape varieties harken back to the Golden State's earliest winemaking efforts.
Tasting Note
The LIOCO 2019 Indica Red may be of a more esoteric style but don't think that means it sacrifices any complexity. This is the kind of wine you can pop and pour every night of the week but particularly among friends and family. The palate is juicy but shows a concentration and purity of black fruits, thanks to those old Mendocino vines, that helps you realize this is the real deal.
