"The 2019 Enclos Tourmaline is a heady, explosive wine. Vinification in barrel seems to have amplified flavors and textures. Plush dark cherry, espresso, licorice, dark spice, menthol and leather build a sumptuous, exotic Pomerol that hits all the right notes. Tasted two times." 02/22 Antonio Galloni
Enclos Tourmaline is located on the highest point of the famous plateau of the smallest appellation of Bordeaux: Pomerol. The property was acquired by Peter Kwok and his son Howard in 2012. Enclos Tourmaline is produced in small quantities only during great vintages. The first vintage produced less than 1,000 bottles. Derived from holdings on the plateau respectively located between Le Pin and Trotanoy, opposite Clinet, and opposite the Château of La Fleur-Pétrus.
This is pure merlot, with black chocolate, bark, black truffle, ripe plum, and violets. Some black olives. This is very structured and linear with super fine tannins that run very, very long. Dense silky texture. Less than 3,000 bottles made. 1.1 hectares in total. Needs five to six years of bottle age. Try after 2027. -JamesSuckling.com
What could end up being a real superstar in the vintage, the tiny production 2020 Enclos Tourmaline is 100% Merlot, from clay soils, that’s still resting in 100% new French oak. It boasts a rich, powerful, full-bodied style that carries lots of minerality as well as structure to go with ample darker berry and cassis-like fruit, notes of camphor, toasted spice, incense, plenty of background oak, and building tannins. It’s a beautiful wine, but it’s not for those seeking instant gratification. 94-96+
It has a chiseled bouquet, beautifully defined and focused, unfurling gradually to reveal blackberry, blueberry, crushed rock and light violet aromas. There is a sense of "weightlessness" about these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very sapid and saline, a Pomerol that is keen to get the juices flowing even at this early stage. This has wonderful poise and precision. Perhaps one of the best Enclos Tourmaline vintages that I have tasted since its inception. Highly recommended. (NM)
The 2020 Enclos Tourmaline is made from 100% Merlot, harvested on the 16th of September, aging in 100% new French oak barriques. It weighs in with an alcohol of 14.7% and a pH of 3.67. Revealing a very deep purple-black color, it has a profound nose of blackberry pie, blueberry compote and plum preserves, with underlying suggestions of licorice, espresso, black olives and crushed rocks. The rich, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with fragrant black fruit preserves, framed by velvety tannins and a fantastic line of freshness, finishing with great length and wonderful purity. Enclos Tourmaline comes from the lieu-dit Clinet, close to La Fleur-Pétrus and Trotanoy. In 2020, it is anticipated that 2,400 bottles will be made. - LPB, Wine Advocate
