Joseph Drouhin - Romanee St. Vivant 1996 (1.5L)

Joseph Drouhin Description

Since 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin has built a reputation for wines that reflect their individual terroir and vintage. A balance of tradition and modern techniques characterizes Joseph Drouhin winemaking and vineyard management: on site nursery, plowing, leaf removal, 100% hand harvesting, open fermenters, fermenting and aging in oak. With its historic location deep in the heart of Beaune, the quality of its vineyards and the expertise resulting from years of experience in the cultivation of vines and traditional vinification, Maison Joseph Drouhin is uniquely placed to uphold authentic Burgundian style. Estate-grown Grapes of 2009 Vintage and later Now Officially Organic.

A View from the Cellar: 92 Points

The 1996 Drouhin Romanée-St.-Vivant is now starting to offer up a really lovely bouquet, but its backend structure is still a bit bound up in snappy acidity. The superb and very complex bouquet offers up scents of strawberries, cherries, sous bois, cloves, a nice touch of bonfire, orange zest, fresh herbs and vinesmoke. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and very complex on the attack, with a nice core of fruit, but still rather aggressive acidity on the long and modestly tannic finish. At age fifteen the tannins are beginning to fall away nicely, but this wine is still a bit too aggressively tannic for primetime drinking and will need a bit more cellaring. (Drink between 2015-2040)
