Le Musigny shares certain characteristics with its neighbour Les Amoureuses; the elegance of richness without heaviness, and it has a similar palette of aromatic composition, although in the case of the Musigny, the underlying structure is less vibrant, more steady, with exceptional depth and intensity of flavour. The length of the finish on the palate is incomparable.
Situated above the Clos de Vougeot between Les Amoueurses and Les Échezeaux, entirely on the part known as Grand-Musigny, marl and limestone soils at top of the hill and more rocky well-draining soils similar to Les Amoureuses at the bottom of the hill, 280 to 300-meters elevation.
Notes from Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier:
"Our approach to both viticulture and wine-making is aimed at preserving in the wines the purest expression of Nature with minimal interference from technological practices. We have a pragmatic approach to viticulture and we favor hand work and preventative protection methods in the vineyard. The purpose is not to eradicate pests and diseases but to preserve or restore a rich and active ecosystem.
With healthy and ripe grapes grown on the greatest terroirs, wine-making only has to be kept simple and respectful."
Fine bright colour, exquisitely refined bouquet with amazing intensity. The aromatics just grow steadily – far from blockbuster but quite exquisite. There are floral notes too as well as fruit, violets and peonies, alongside dense dark cherries. This is very fine indeed, the fruit sweeps gloriously through the middle palate, but not quite the concentrated tension for the highest score.
The 2014 Musigny Grand Cru is just being released. Wafting from the glass with aromas of rose petals, Egyptian musk, orange rind, peonies, warm spices and red berries, it's full-bodied, velvety and perfumed, with superb concentration, lively acids and fine, powdery tannins that still assert themselves on the long, penetrating and gently chalky finish. This is a brilliant Musigny, but while Mugnier has done some of the work for his clients by aging the wine at the domaine for seven or eight years, it still demands a decade of additional patience. Best after 2030.
