The 2022 Riesling Kabinett Jean Baptiste is almost entirely from the Pettenthal but was fermented in several bins according to the different plots. Pure and flinty on the finely intense nose, the wine is light, lush and savory on the palate, vibrantly fresh and saline, with fine mineral grip and a remarkably characterful finish. 10.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted at the domaine in October 2023. – Stephan Reinhardt,
The 2022 Riesling Jean Baptiste Kabinett is named after the founder of the estate, a banker who sold his business and bought both Rothenberg and Engelsberg with the proceeds in 1890, believing this spot to be utterly unique. Hasselbach calls this wine the liquid calling card of the estate, its most important wine commercially. The fruit is sourced mainly from the cooler parts of Pettenthal, closer to the river. The tell-tale red stone savoriness segues seamlessly into bright lemon. The palate is rounded, juicy and full-fruited, channeling yellow apple and ripest lemon. This is joyful and vivid. Johannes is happy to have achieved lightness in 2022 and an easy balance of freshness for the 25 g/l of residual sweetness. The 2022 is a true Kabinett with a zesty finish. - Anne Krebiehl MW
