The origin of the name Craipillot comes from the French word "craie" designating a stony terrain, and "pillot" possibly a pile stones. Gevrey vignerons always talk of the "cône de dejection" from the Combe Lavaux, or; in English, the wash of sand, stones and rocks from the Lavaux Valley and its river/glacier that was forced downslope over millennia, across what are now many of Gevrey’s vineyards. These vines in this 1er Cru average over 75yo with some up to 100yo, and make a beautifully concentrated wine. Craipillot often produces lively, very fruity wines with aromas of liquorice and violet, less structured than other 1er crus like Clos du Chateau and Clos St Jacques across the road, it is nevertheless powerful with a lot of finesse.
The Craipillot locality boasts 2.75 hectares. Domaine Gérard Seguin owns 0.9 hectare of that, which came from the family property. It is made up of very old vines, most of which are over 90 years old, and some even more than 100 years old.
Craipillot is at the upper exit of the village, at the entrance to Combe de Lavaux, and at the foot of Clos Saint-Jacques. It is located just behind the farm. The soil is made up of marly debris and pebbles from the Combe de Lavaux. It is well drained in the middle by the Grand Vaux ditch.
Gevrey-Chambertin wine is produced in the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Brochon in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Gevrey-Chambertin may be used only for red wine with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. There are nine Grand Cru vineyards within the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambertin and eight others called Chambertin in combination with something else, such as Chapelle-Chambertin. While Gevrey-Chambertin also has several highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards, it has a particularly large amount of vineyards at the village level for a Côte de Nuits appellation. This is because the vineyards of the AOC stretch further to the east (beyond the N74 road) than in most neighbouring AOCs.
