Domaine de La Vougeraie Description

The Domaine de La Vougeraie is a selection of estates acquired over time and blended with the family's own vines. Its history goes back to 1964 with Les Evocelles, the first plot to be acquired by our father at the start of his career in his home village of Gevrey-Chambertin.

Containing the largest Grand Cru in all of the Côte d’Or, Vougeot, the village, takes its name from the small stream flowing through it, called Vouge. Over three quarters of the village retains Grand Cru status, and a single vineyard at that: Clos de Vougeot (or simply, Clos Vougeot). Its mass—over 50 ha—retains the single name chiefly for historic reasons.

But today, Clos de Vougeot contains over 80 owners and shows significant soil and slope variations within its boundaries. The top, bordering Musigny and Grands Echezeaux, is calcareous and gravelly on oolitic limestone and exhibits wonderful drainage. The middle sections are limestone, gravel and clay with less of a slope. The lower part has little slant and is mostly made of clay. Historically the diverse parcels were blended but today the abundance of owners means that everyone has his own style. Exploring and understanding them is part of the allure of Clos de Vougeot.

In general a fine Clos de Vougeot when young will be dense and dark but juicy, with a pronounced austerity, and needs a good ten years to bring it to its full potential.

Wine Spectator: 95 Points

Expressive, spicy and silky, with berry and cherry fruit wrapped in toasty, vanilla-tinged oak. Firm yet elegant, with a layer of dusty tannins; however, the lasting impression is ripe fruit and an underlying mineral element. Just needs time. Best from 2026 through 2045.

Inside Burgundy: 94-96 Points

94-96pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "The two plots are picked and vinified separately, assembled when the wine is racked to tank. Fine bright purple, with a depth of fruit, almost an exuberance, which is really pleasing. Really delicious fruit weight, just the right acidity and excellent length. Just 25% whole bunches this year. Tasted: November 2020.

Decanter

There are two parcels here; one of nearly a hectare resulting from the purchase of l'Héritier Guyot near the entrance to the château, the other is from Pierre Ponnelle at the bottom of the slope. Despite the difference in maturity of the two parcels, the result is perfumed and very elegant, if lacking a bit of tension and grip. Drinking Window 2021 - 2029. (CC)
