Gevrey-Chambertin wine is produced in the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Brochon in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Gevrey-Chambertin may be used only for red wine with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. There are nine Grand Cru vineyards within the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambertin and eight others called Chambertin in combination with something else, such as Chapelle-Chambertin. While Gevrey-Chambertin also has several highly regarded Premier Cru vineyards, it has a particularly large amount of vineyards at the village level for a Côte de Nuits appellation. This is because the vineyards of the AOC stretch further to the east (beyond the N74 road) than in most neighbouring AOCs.

Inside Burgundy: 92 Points

This comes from the Brochon side such from vineyards such as En Derey, Champerriers, Le Clos where the subsoil is predominantly ostrea accuminata. Much deeper denser colour, with a powerful dark red and blueberry fruit then some tannins and a drier finish more typical of Gevrey. Much more structure than the straight Gevrey and with a sense of mineral precision.

A View from the Cellar: 91 Points

The 2016 Ostrea bottling from Jean-Louis Trapet is a fine wine in the making, but it is more structured and reserved at the present time than the straight Gevrey. The bouquet is still quite primary, but with a bit of coaxing offers up scents of black cherries, grilled meats, a fine base of black minerality, espresso, a bit of bonfire and a discreet framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep full-bodied and quite closed at the present time, with a rock solid core, fine soil signature, ripe, well-integrated tannins and impressive length and grip on the well-balanced and youthful finish. This will be an outstanding example, but give it some time! (Drink between 2022-2055)
