Bastian Jolivet of Domaine Jolivet is a budding star in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, Saint Joseph which is part of the original 6 communes delineated in 1956 before the appellation was expanded in 1969. The domaine began in 2014 when Bastian, who recently returned from his various internships locally and abroad (Domaine du Monteillet in Condrieu, as well as further afield in New Zealand and South Africa), decided along with his father to stop selling the fruit from their 10 hectares to the local cooperative and bottle their own wine.
"Saturated violet color. Highly perfumed red and blue fruit preserve, potpourri and olive aromas are sharpened by cracked pepper and smoky mineral nuances. Sappy, appealingly sweet and prices on the palate offering energetic blueberry, cherry-cola and candied violet flavors that show impressive depth and become spicier with air. Finishes smoky, smooth and impressively long, with lingering spiciness and gentle, slow-building tannins that lend final grip."-Josh Raynolds
"There's a gently herbal, earthy side to the black fruits that gives this wine personality. Not overly full-bodied, there's some space in the wine. Clear, defined, there's good fruit here, good freshness and a nice, slightly lean side that makes for quite a drinkable expression from Domaine Jolivet this year. Well balanced, not a big Saint-Joseph, but an enjoyably classic one."-Matt Walls
