Domaine Felettig - Corton Les Lolieres 2020

Corton is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red and white wine in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. It is located on a hill shared between the three villages of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy. The appellation covers the lower parts of the Corton hill and includes several subordinate vineyard names, or climats, within the AOC. Because of the size of the AOC and the variability of these climats, it is the rule rather than the exception that the name of the climat is indicated together with that of the Corton AOC, leading to designations such as Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Les Bressandes. Corton is rare in this aspect, as the 'climat' is seldom used for other Grand Cru appellations in Côte d'Or. The AOC was created in 1937.

Corton wines are mostly red (around 95 per cent of the total production in the AOC) and made from the Pinot noir grape, however a smaller quantity of white Corton from Chardonnay is also produced. Around 500,000 bottles a year are produced from the vines.

The Corton appellation itself is the Côte de Beaune's only Grand Cru appellation for red wine, and is the largest Grand Cru of Burgundy.

Domaine Felettig Description

Domaine Felettig, a decade ago hardly anyone knew this name, and yet Gilbert Felettig’s wines are now considered as some of the finest in Chambolle-Musigny.

Gilbert and Christine are the second generations of wine-grower of this relatively young estate. They succeeded their father, Henri Felettig, who created the estate in the 1970s. Former vineyard worker, Henri first inherited 2 hectares of vine in 1965, he then spent most of his life growing the estate. Close to 30 years later Gilbert and Christine were taking over a 9-hectare Domaine.
Today, the domaine extends from Gevrey-Chambertin to Beaune, via les Hautes Côte de nuits and Beaune, on a total of 13 hectares. The Domaine comprises prestigious appellations such as Grand Cru les Echézeaux and many of the premier crus of Chambolle-Musigny.

Until recently, much of Felettig’s wine was sold to négociants, including the Dominique Laurent, Olivier Bernstein and Domaine Dujac’s negociant operation, all of whom valued the careful, organic farming of Gilbert. Now, however, Gilbert Felettig has found a style of his own in the winery, and the entire crop is domaine-bottled. The production here is limited with only about 50,000 bottles produced per year.

Over the years Gilbert Felettig has gradually and continuously increased the quality of his wines. Experimentations and changes truly started in 2011 and it is finally the 2013 vintage that marked a breakthrough at this address when Christophe Roumier gladly admitted that Domaine Felettig’s Chambolle-Musigny village was the best expression of Chambolle village of that difficult vintage.

Felettig wines are traditionally crafted, and very representative of a style of Chambolle. With wine lovers and countless critics singing his praise it comes as no surprise that Gilbert is universally seen as one of the rising stars in Burgundy. And with Gilbert’s daughter, Pauline, starting to get involved at the domaine, the continuation of this estate looks assured and in good hands!

Burghound: 91-93 Points

Riper liqueur-like aromas include those of cassis, dark cherry, roasted plum and whiffs of earth and the sauvage. The supple and extraordinarily rich big-bodied flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract while buffering the firm tannic spine shaping the chewy, serious and austere finale where noticeable warmth slowly appears. This is one of those wines that is hard to rating because there is much to admire but the warmth isn't subtle. Some will undoubtedly admire it for its size, weight and power and some will criticize it for being rather atypical.
