The "Clos de l'Écu" appellation dates back to the Middle Ages. This clos enabled owners at the time to pay the sums they owed to the Dukes of Bourgogne. It is a monopole parcel and was purchased in 2003 by François Faiveley, the 6th generation of the family.
Exposition: South / Soil: Gravel / Grape Variety: Pinot Noir / Characteristics of our plot: Surface area 2 ha 37a 03 ca [5, 86 Acres] / Years the vines were planted: 1980, 1989, 1994, 1998
The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. The proportion of de-stemmed grapes and whole clusters varies depending on the vintage. The wines are punched down daily in order to extract colour, tannins and aromas from the skin of the grapes. After a 19 day vatting period, the alcoholic fermentation is complete. The free-run wine is run off using a gravity system whilst the marc is pressed slowly and gently in order to extract an exceptionally pure press wine. The wines are aged for 14 months in French oak barrels (a third of which are new oak) which have been selected for their fine grain and moderate toast. The wines are left to age in our cellars at consistent, natural hygrometry and temperature.
The Domaine of Faiveley is situated in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, France. Wine runs deep in the Faiveley family’s blood. Seven generations and one of the largest owners in Burgundy, with holdings spreading from the Côte de Nuits to the Côte Chalonnaise, featuring polished, collectible reds and whites with exceptionally high ratings. Today it is managed by Erwan Faiveley and his sister Eve Faiveley.
"Faiveley’s wines are... supremely clean and elegant: definitive examples of Pinot Noir... above all they have richness and breed, the thumbprint of a master winemaker." -Clive Coates M.W. Côte d’Or, A Celebration of the Great Wines of Burgundy.
This is opulent and concentrated, offering black cherry, plum, earth and peppery spice flavors. Firm and tightly coiled, with accents of smoke and licorice on the lasting finish. Best from 2024.
Clos de l'Ecu is a 2.37ha monopole, purchased from Jaboulet-Vercherre in 2003, which forms the upper portion of l’Ecu, just underneath the woods at the top. The site ripened fruit well in 2019, producing a lovely deep colour, dark fruit on the nose and a slightly savoury note. On the palate, it is tannic, structured and almost a bit rustic. The sweet fruit comes through on the finish. Drinking Window 2021 - 2039. (CC)
Aromas of plums, rich forest floor, warm spices and smoked meats introduce the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Écu Monopole, a medium-bodied, bright and elegant wine that's satiny and melting, with lively acids and fine, powdery tannins. This is as fine a rendition of the Clos de l'Écu as I can remember tasting.
