The 2016 Tinto, the estate flagship, is a field blend from old vines (90+ years) aged for 22 months in 50% new French oak (the rest second use). It comes in at 14% alcohol. Even though bottled less than two weeks when seen, this showed awfully well. Elegant and precise, it has a tight, gripping finish and mid-palate finesse. There's a tinge of wood and creamy texture up front, but that gets better with extended aeration. With that aeration, this also becomes more expressive—although this is never a warm Douro red. It is always more about structure and precision than rich and jammy fruit. Initially, it was only hard and tight, a bit reluctant to reveal what it has just now. Overall, this really needs a couple of years of cellaring, at the least. It has closed a bit and shows less well now in some ways than originally, but I'm confident it will be back.
