The first proper bottling in Chateau Clos du Roy was in 1970. Beforehand, the grapes of this small wine estate were sold as bulk wine. Clos du Roy quickly gained fame and is now ranked among the higher quality Fronsac wines. A family owned 15-hectare wine estate whose wines fully express the richness and the complexity of the greatest Fronsac vines. The Clos du Roy in great vintages can age gracefully for a decade.
The 2019 Clos du Roy has an intense bouquet of marine-tinged black fruit, though I get the feeling that it’s already beginning to close down. The palate is medium-bodied and concentrated, with firm tannins, plenty of black fruit and impressive structure on the finish. Very fine, but give it a couple of years in bottle.
I loved the 2019 Clos Du Roy from barrel, and it doesn’t disappoint from bottle. Ripe black cherries, chocolaty herbs, licorice, and graphite are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a round, layered texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming decade.
