Charmes-Chambertin is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. It is located in the southern part of the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin and on the lower hillside east of Chambertin (on the other side of the Route des Grands Crus), north of Mazoyères-Chambertin and south of Griotte-Chambertin. The AOC was created in 1937.
The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has turned out brilliantly, wafting from the glass with a compelling bouquet of cherries, wild berries, peonies, dark chocolate, licorice and spices. Full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, its fleshy core of fruit is built around powdery tannins and succulent acids, complemented by inviting sapid nuance. I'm very happy to have several bottles aging in my cellar.
(Domaine Claude Dugat Charmes-chambertin Grand Cru Red) The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru offers red cherries and blueberry fruit on the nose, which lives up to its name, though I find more complexity this year on the Lavaux Saint-Jacques by direct comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, a very smooth texture and impressive density, though I discern just a little heaviness on the finish at the moment. (Drink between 2023-2042)
