Chateau La Tour de Mons Description

The Château La Tour de Mons is a single block vineyard, surrounded by a wall and located in the northern part of the Margaux appellation near the banks of the Garonne, as are all the very best Médoc Crus.

The history of La Tour de Mons begins in 1098 with the creation of the seigneury of Soussans by William IX the Troubadour, Duke of Aquitaine, Count of Poitiers and Gascony.

La Tour de Mons’ fortified manor house was certainly built in the 13th century by the lords of Blanquefort.

Since the beginning many generations have been involved on these lands. Amongst its illustrious owners was Pierre de Mons, who through his marriage acquired the property in 1623, gave it his name and devoted his life to the development of the vineyard. Pierre de Mons also bought the noble houses of Labégorce and Bessan and inherited the seigneury of Marsac thus becoming the first holder of the seven seigneuries which made up the domain of Soussans at its origin. The Château La Tour de Mons belonged to his lieage until the end of the 20th century.

History is repeated almost 400 years later when in 2020 the Château La Tour de Mons is sold by CA Grands Crus to the Perrodo family, who already own two close neigbors : Château Labégorce Margaux and Château Marquis d’Alesme, an 1855 Grand Gru Classé. The Perrodo’s love at first sight for the Margaux region is in line with those who have loved this land over the centuries; they also have a vision, which reveals the astounding potential of a territory to raise it to a high level of quality. These last few years a major renovation programme has been implemented: construction of a new winery and an air-conditioned storage cellar, major drainage programme and management of the vineyard in the interests of sustainable ecological practices. The Château is now managed by Marjolaine Maurice de Coninck, managing director and oenologist, assisted by the advice of oenologist Claude Gros. They continue with passion and meticulousness the enhancement of this great Margaux terroir.

58 ha of a single block

The vineyard lies on Garonne gravel and limestone-clay and covers 58 hectares (143 acres) in a single block. The average age of the vines is 40 years old, split between 61% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

James Suckling: 93 Points

Some fine, sweet spices and licorice to the ripe but fresh currants and berries. Tightly wound and juicy, with medium to full body and a lengthy, slightly peppery finish. Fine-grained and evenly packed. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Château La Tour De Mons is a blend of 57% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. It’s a beautifully ripe Margaux offering notes of red and blue fruits, rose petals, and background spicy oak. Medium to full-bodied, it’s beautifully balanced, with fine tannins and an elegant, seamless mouthfeel. Aged in 20% new oak for 12 months, it’s a classic, well-made Margaux that should evolve gracefully over the next 15+ years.

Jane Anson: 92 Points

Softer shape to this than many wines in the appellation, a reflection of the clay limestone soils that make it pretty atypical for Margaux, and here the spices highlight nutmeg and cinnamon along with ripe damson fruits, fresh acidities that give a welcome kick of juice on the end, 60% new oak, harvest September 8 to 22, 100% handpicked since Nathalie Perrodo took over in 2020.
