Chateau Clos L'Eglise - Pomerol 2020 (Pre-arrival)

Chateau Clos L'Eglise Description

In the 18th century, Clos L'Eglise with its 14 hectares was considered to be a very big domaine for Pomerol, ahead of about a dozen great wines which formed – and still form –the heart of Pomerol. The estate subsequently took the name of Clos L'Eglise. However, following succession problems, it was split into two with, on the one side, the original Clos L'Eglise (Rouchut family) and on the other, Clos L'Eglise-Clinet (Mauléon family). Clos L'Eglise therefore has a continuous wine-producing tradition spread of several centuries.

Today it is the efforts of Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard that have developed it fully. She took over the property in January 1997, and using her experience at Chateau Haut-Bergey in Pessac-Léognan, she completely reorganized the chai.

Jeb Dunnuck: 99 Points

A real “wow” wine, the 2020 Clos L'Eglise sports deep ruby hue as well as an absolutely stunning bouquet of black cherries, red plums, damp earth, chocolate, truffle, and lead pencil. This deep, full-bodied, concentrated, beauty has that classic Pomerol opulence and richness paired with an incredible sense of elegance. The tannins are perfectly ripe as well. Give bottles just 4-5 years, and it's going to age beautifully. This is the finest wine I've tasted from the Garcin-Lévêque family, surpassing both the 2009 and 2016. Don't miss it.

Vinous: 96 Points

The 2020 Clos L'Eglise is not as showy as it was from barrel, perhaps because of its recent bottling. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, mint, blood orange and rose petal are all laced together. En primeur, Clos L'Eglise was quite powerful, but I see more finesse today. Even so, this is one of the most concentrated Clos L'Eglises ever, since surpassed by the 2022, though!

James Suckling: 94 Points

A very fine-tannined red with currant, berry, violet and dried orange peel. Medium body, firm tannins and a linear finish. Very fine and pretty. This will age nicely. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.
