Chateau Carbonnieux - Pessac-Leognan Blanc 2019

"Intense bouquet with lime zest, peach skin and beeswax scents, nicely focused with good attack. The palate is very well balanced with lovely pineapple and orange pith notes on the entry. Very cohesive with a tangy and vigorous finish." Neal Martin, Vinous Media

Chateau Carbonnieux Description

Château Carbonnieux / PESSAC-LÉOGNAN / CRU CLASSÉ DE GRAVES

One of the most ancient winegrowing estates in Bordeaux, Château Carbonnieux has made wine without interruption since the 13th century. Built in an understated style, the château itself is an impressive building dating from the Middle Ages.

The first owners – and accomplished winegrowers – were the Benedictine monks of Sainte-Croix abbey in Bordeaux, who made internationally-renowned red and white wines centuries ago. They also succeeded in introducing their palecoloured, crystalclear white wine to the palace of the Sultan of Constantinople by labelling it “Mineral Water of Carbonnieux” to get around the prohibition against alcoholic beverages...

Located on the highest point in the commune of Léognan, on soil that is perfectly drained by a stream called L’Eau Blanche, Carbonnieux’s terroir is especially conducive to producing fine quality red and white wines. Carbonnieux has belonged to the Perrin family for three generations.

Wine Enthusiast: 94 Points

The estate is noted for white wine, and this latest release lives up to the reputation. This textured, mainly Sauvignon Blanc wine has tight acidity set against wood aging and ripe citrus and white-fruit flavors.

Decanter: 93 Points

A great Carbonnieux, with careful balance of juicy, salt-edged minerality and creamy nectarine and apricot fruits. Always a real highlight of the whites of the appellation and delivering another hit in 2019. Tasted twice two weeks apart. A yield of 40hl/ha. (Drink between 2021-2030)

James Suckling: 93 Points

Dried lemon, beeswax, sage, pineapple and guava on the nose. Medium-bodied with tangy acidity. Vibrant citrus and tropical fruit. Compact, creamy and intense. 65% sauvignon blanc and 35% semillon.

Vinous: 91-93 Points

The 2019 Carbonnieux Blanc was picked from 29 August to 18 September at 42hl/ha and aged in 25% new oak. It has an intense bouquet with lime zest, peach skin and beeswax scents, nicely focused with good attack. The palate is very well balanced with lovely pineapple and orange pith notes on the entry. Very cohesive with a tangy and vigorous finish. Excellent. (Drink between 2022-2040) Neal Martin, Vinous Media
