Bruno Clair - Vosne-Romanée Les Champs Perdrix 2020

Vosne-Romanée wine is produced in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Côte de Nuits of Burgundy as well as in the neighbouring commune of Flagey-Échezeaux. The Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) Vosne-Romanée may only be used for red wine with Pinot noir as the main grape. There are a total of 15 Premier Cru vineyards in the two communes, as well as six Grand Cru vineyards in Vosne-Romanée and two in Flagey-Échezeaux. These Grand Cru vineyards include Burgundy's most iconic, sought-after and expensive red wines, with Romanée-Conti of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti at the pinnacle: "There can be little doubt that in the firmament of the Cote de nuits, Vosne-Romanée is the brightest star."

There is no Flagey-Échezeaux appellation; the village and Premier Cru vineyards of this commune are part of the Vosne-Romanée AOC.

Bruno Clair Description

The family history at Domaine Bruno Clair is quite complex, as is often the case in wine estates in Burgundy. Beginning in 1919 and proceeding forward Bruno represents the sixth generation of winegrowers.

From 1986 the estate comprised 17 hectares spread over the villages of Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Vosne-Romanée and Savigny-Les-Beaune. From 1990 they added parcels in Chambolle-Musigny, Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Bonnes-Mares: acquired gradually – it had previously been rented. To date, the estate comprises 27 hectares across 8 villages, and produces 32 different appellations.

Today the whole family is involved: Edouard, their eldest son, Margaux and Arthur. Each of the children now has a specific role.

Wine Advocate: 91 Points

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Champs Perdrix has turned out beautifully, revealing aromas of sweet cherries and raspberries mingled with notions of rose petal, bergamot and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with powdery tannins, tangy acids and a saline finish, it transcends the heat of the vintage.

Vinous: 90-92 Points

Inside Burgundy: 89-92 Points

The deepest purple so far, surprising for this hillside site, but perhaps a result of a late malolactic here. Maybe a fraction of reduction, actually more on the palate, otherwise very good deep fruit, with a slightly herbaceous thread at the moment. Otherwise, a fine sweet dark fruit behind.
