Charmes-Chambertin is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. It is located in the southern part of the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin and on the lower hillside east of Chambertin (on the other side of the Route des Grands Crus), north of Mazoyères-Chambertin and south of Griotte-Chambertin. The AOC was created in 1937.
Hailing from an old vine parcel near the holdings of Rousseau and Duroché, the 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is excellent, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, berries, dried flowers and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a generous core of fruit that cloaks its velvety tannins, displaying excellent energy and concluding with a persistent finish. This gets my nod as the finest of Arnaud Mortet's cuvées for his own label this year.
At the northern end of the appellation. Fine mid purple, a little touch of reduction on the nose cannot hide the up-front opulence of classical Charmes, then the vibrant succulent Charmes fruit, excellent length. Not a blockbuster but a bouncy joyous wine.
This too is aromatically cool, pure and airy with a more elegant array of high-toned essence of red cherry, raspberry and noticeable floral influence. The sleek, delicious and detailed medium-bodied flavors possess a highly refined and seductive mouthfeel before culminating in a muscular, firm and more austere finale that possesses notably better balance. Good stuff fashioned in a more robust style and powerful style. (Drink starting 2032)
