Charmes-Chambertin is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. It is located in the southern part of the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin and on the lower hillside east of Chambertin (on the other side of the Route des Grands Crus), north of Mazoyères-Chambertin and south of Griotte-Chambertin. The AOC was created in 1937.
(Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Arnaud Mortet, Red) At the northern end of the appellation. Fine mid purple, a little touch of reduction on the nose cannot hide the up-front opulence of classical Charmes, then the vibrant succulent Charmes fruit, excellent length. Not a blockbuster but a bouncy joyous wine. Tasted: December 2018.
"Pungent, very pure aromas of raspberry, crushed stone and rose petal: a real essence of le vrai Charmes. Juicy, fine-grained and penetrating, combining excellent density with an impression of weightlessness in a way that very few Pinot Noirs made outside Burgundy can accomplish. Brisk rose petal and red licorice flavors contribute to the impression of sharp definition. A very classy, feminine, youthfully imploded style of Charmes with terrific finishing cut and grip. Finishes with very suave tannins and sneaky rising length. Showing brilliantly today."-Stephen Tanzer
