Disgorged in January 2023, the NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru Le Terroir (2020 base) is following hard on the heels of its 2019-base counterpart. A little more reserved out of the gates, it unwinds to reveal notes of pear, citrus oil, white flowers and almond paste, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pillowy and precise palate that's fine-boned, bright and mineral.
The le Terroir non-vintage Brut bottling from Adrien Renoir is composed of a fifty-fifty blend of chardonnay and pinot noir. Eighty percent of the vins clairs are vinified and raised in stainless steel, with the other twenty percent barrel-fermented. The wine is from the base year of 2016, with twenty percent reserve wines from 2015 included and it was bottled up for secondary fermentation in May of 2017. The wine was disgorged in May of 2019 and finished with a dosage of 2.5 grams per liter. It offers up a superb bouquet of white peach, apple, fresh-baked bread, a fine base of Verzy’s “steely” minerality, almond and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and rock solid at the core, with vibrant acids, fine focus and grip, frothy mousse and a long, well-balanced and classic finish. Verzy always is a beautifully mineral example of Champagne and this release of le Terroir from Monsieur Renoir completely embodies that maxim. This is already very tasty, but it will be even better with a few years in the cellar to let its secondary layers of complexity unfold. (Drink between 2020-2040)
