Trediberri - Barolo del Comune di La Morra 2018

Trediberri Description

Berri is a small hamlet in the westernmost part of La Morra, located in the Langhe hills of Piemonte, close to the Tanaro river. It lies at the extreme western edge of the Barolo region. Here, in 2007, Nicola, his father Federico and their friend Vladimiro, acquired 5 hectares circa (12.5 acres) exclusively for the production of Barolo. The Trediberri winery was born.

Our first wine was released in 2011 and today we vinify wine from 10,5 ha (26 acres) of vineyards: in addition to the original 5 ha (12 acres) in the Berri Cru, we also own 2,8 ha (7 acres) in the Crus of Rocche dell’Annunziata and Torriglione – where we grow Barolo, Barbera and Sauvignon Blanc – and we are currently renting 3 ha (7,5 acres) of Dolcetto and Nebbiolo in Vicoforte, within the most southern village of Langhe Region, at the feet of the Alps.

We are a young, artisanal family winery. We have no ancestral coat of arms depicting rampant horses and fluttering ensigns. We have no history and that is fine by us: we like talking about the present, through our wines.

A View from the Cellar: 94 Points

I was first introduced to the lovely wines from Trediberri last year, and I only regret they had not come along in my relative youth, as I would now have a cellarful of their wines today! I love the traditional style of their wines and their 2018 Barolo is no exception, as this is a stunning young wine. The estate normally will produce a single vineyard bottling from the Rocche dell’Annunziata, but in 2018, they decided to include the fruit from this parcel also in the blended cuvée. The bouquet jumps from the glass in a complex, sappy blend of cherries, spit-roasted pigeon, anise, woodsmoke, a beautifully complex base of soil, a touch of fresh oregano and a gardenful of roses in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant in profile (in proper La Morra fashion), with lovely depth at the core, fine soil signature and grip, ripe, chewy tannins, good acids and a long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. This is going to be a great bottle in due course. - John Gilman

Vinous: 92 Points

The 2018 Barolo del Comune di La Morra is absolutely gorgeous. Bright and translucent yet with remarkable depth for the year, the 2018 is terrific. Proprietor Nicola Oberto decided not to bottle his flagship Barolo from Rocche dell'Annunziata and used the fruit to bolster his straight Barolo bottling, a decision that was spot on. Sweet red cherry, orange peel, cinnamon, tobacco and dried leaves are all very nicely lifted in this ethereal, nuanced Barolo. The 2018 is simply exquisite. Readers will have a hard time finding a better example of the year at this level.
