"The 2023 Fleurie “Griffe du Marquis” bottling from Clos de la Roilette shows some influence from those heat spikes in the back half of August leading into harvest in this vintage, as the wine comes in at 14.5 percent octane this year. However, it is fresh and vibrant on the nose, showing no signs of sur maturité in its sappy bouquet of black cherries, sweet dark berries, pigeon, dark chocolate, a superb base of dark soil, just a whisper of fresh thyme, cedary oak, plenty of smokiness and a pungent topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, sappy and complex, with great depth of fruit, fine soil undertow and grip, ripe tannins and impressive length and grip on the long, gently warm and beautifully balanced finish. As is customary with the Griffe du Marquis, this will demand a bit of cellaring before it starts to drink with true generosity, but it is going to be an excellent wine once the tannins have softened up properly."-John Gilman
